If you have any of the following symptoms, you should seek an expert opinion at Northeast Vein & Laser Center for advice on the best vein treatment option:

  • Chronically tired or aching legs
  • Difficulty walking more than very short distances
  • Burning, itching or throbbing in your legs
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Veins visible close to the surface of your legs with a bulging, knotty or ropy appearance
  • Easily visible, dark red, purple or blue veins that bulge through the skin on your legs
  • Roadmap-like blue or red veins close to the surface of your head, neck, arms. legs or chest

All of the above are symptoms of varicose veins, spider veins or related problems such as venous reflux.

What causes varicose veins?

Blood flows from the limbs to the heart through veins. In healthy leg veins, the blood flows smoothly, pumped along by a series of valves. However, a number of factors – including age, stress, weight gain, pregnancy and heredity – can cause these valves to weaken. As they do, blood no longer moves effectively through the vein but pools or even reverses itself at the faulty valve. When this blood pooling occurs, it results in the discolored knots or bulges visible with varicose veins.
